Festival Director Welcome 2020
Tēnā koutou katoa. Welcome to the 15th annual Show Me Shorts Film Festival. It is with great pleasure that we present this collection of short films. My team and I have spent the whole year scouring the country and globe for the very best.
In a time of great upheaval, as a pandemic rages around the world, we need the magic of cinema to distract and entertain us, to connect us with others, and take us places we can’t travel to right now.
Many of the films in our programme will be making their world premiere. Others come to us from the likes of Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno and Toronto film festivals, where they have screened to much acclaim. The films include stars as high profile as Will Ferrell in David, and Matt Dillon in Nimic, plus complete newcomers making their debut.
We are excited to include the work of well-known directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) alongside local directors such as James Cunningham (Prickly Jam), Claire van Beek (Daniel), Kyan Krumdieck (Working Class), Hannah Marshall (Frankie Jean and the Morning Star), Anna Rose Duckworth (Pain) and Zoey Zhao (Foods for Coping).
This is by far our largest programme ever, with 78 short films from 24 countries: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Iceland, Iran, Israel, Italy, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, USA, UK and Ukraine. The films span a wide variety of genres, including comedy, documentary, fantasy, animation, drama, science fiction, horror and mockumentary.
We also have two collections of films from the UK, curated in collaboration with the team from London Short Film Festival. A massive thanks to Festival Director Philip Ilson and programmer Thomas Grimshaw for their assistance with these wonderful films.
Three of our eleven programmes will be available to watch online for the duration of the main festival. We hope this will help us reach more audiences in far-flung parts of the country, or those who are stuck at home.
If you can make it to the cinema, we invite you to join us. Support our cinemas and enjoy a night out, indulging in some of the finest short films available.
