Festival Director honoured with MNZM

Our Festival Director Gina Dellabarca has been appointed as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year Honours for services to the film industry.

Chair of the Board, Andrew Cornwell, says: “Gina co-founded Show Me Shorts in 2006, and has been the driving force behind the festival since. Her role was a voluntary one for the first decade. She has been a tireless champion for New Zealand filmmakers and film lovers. Her work has supported numerous filmmakers to gain recognition for their work and further support for their careers. The Board is thrilled that this contribution has been recognised.”

Organisation of Show Me Shorts includes running a system to assess thousands of film entries, staging two opening night functions, a range of professional development workshops, and coordinating venues across the country – including locations as remote as Great Barrier Island and Stewart Island. Dellabarca has successfully developed a diversified revenue stream, built a network of high profile ambassadors to advocate for the festival, and delivered continuous growth. She was also instrumental in gaining Academy Awards accreditation, so that top award winners can qualify for entry to the Oscars.

Dellabarca says, “This is a hugely flattering honour. I’d like to acknowledge my team – fellow co-founders, Board members, ambassadors, sponsors, funders, cinema programmers, the filmmakers especially, and our wider friends and whanau who have supported the kaupapa for Show Me Shorts. Short films are a vital component for building a successful screen industry, and we’re lucky to have both flourishing in Aotearoa.”
