2010 Short Film Lab: Call for Applications

APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 10

Show Me Shorts and Script to Screen are calling for applications for the 2010 Short Film Lab. If you are a budding film writer or writer/director and are developing ideas for short film, then you won’t want to miss this amazing opportunity to take part in our inaugural Short Film Lab. Participants in the workshop will be mentored by experienced industry practitioners who have excelled in short filmmaking, including producer Ainsley Gardiner (Boy, Eagle vs Shark, Two Cars One Night, Tama Tu), writer/director Mark Albiston (Run, The Six Dollar Fifty Man), and screenwriter and academic Shuchi Kothari (Firaaq, Apron Strings, Coffee and Allah).

Up to six writers (or writer/directors) will be selected to workshop their short film ideas during the full-day lab on Saturday 6 November in Auckland. Those selected can come on their own or can bring up to two key creative collaborators along with them. Thanks to the support of the New Zealand Film Commission, participation in the Short Film Lab is free for all selected applicants.*

Interested? Put together a written outline of two to three ideas for short films, send them to us along with a CV/bio and a paragraph on what you want to get out of the Short Film Lab, and pay the $15 application fee. Click here for full application info

Application Deadline: September 10

*Although the Short Film Lab is free, participants will need to be in Auckland for the day of the lab at their own expense.

Entry Deadline Extended

Short filmmakers in Australasia have a reputation for striking images and technical excellence. The range of films that have come into the festival so far this year is demonstrative of bold story choices, and mastery of genre. We expect Show Me Shorts 2010 will showcase some exciting second and third films from our brightest filmmaking stars, complimented by engaging new works from first-time entrants.

Short filmmakers who haven’t yet entered can still do so. The deadline for this year has just been extended by a week, to Monday the 12th of July.

Show Me Shorts plays the 40 best Kiwi and Australian short films in cinemas nation wide every November. The films must be between three and 30 minutes long, and made within the last three years.

The winners of last year’s Show Me Shorts awards took home over $10,000 worth of prizes. Previous Best Film winning shorts have featured misfits (Ray), sunken ships (A Very Nice Honeymoon), animated chickens (Noise Control) and school children (Just Like the Others). Other popular films shined a light on shoe addiction, animal human hybrids, dating etiquette, possessed hamsters, pick-up artists and of course post-apocalyptic zombies.

For those looking for inspiration or just entertainment the ‘Best of Show Me Shorts’ DVD is available for sale at http://arklesentertainment.com/smsnz/.
