Accidents, Blunders & Calamities

And the People’s Choice Award winner is…

“Accidents, Blunders & Calamities” charmed audiences nationwide.

Congratulations to James Cunningham and Oliver Hilbert, who have taken out the 2015 Show Me Shorts People’s Choice Award for their animated film Accidents, Blunders & Calamities. This is one of our most prestigious awards, because it is decided by our audiences.

Accidents, Blunders & Calamities is a black comedy for all ages, an alphabet of death in which a father possum reads a cautionary bedtime story to his children about the most dangerous animal… humans!

Cunningham and Hilbert both lecture at Auckland’s Media Design School and co-produced the film, working with third-year students on the project. Cunningham also directed, wrote and edited the film, and received the DEGNZ Best Editor Award at the Show Me Shorts Opening Night and Awards Ceremony in November.

Cunningham is thrilled with the People’s Choice Award announcement, saying, “This is great news and it means a lot to me that the audiences loved the film. It was great watching our film play in a cinema full of people and hearing them laugh. Now I have to try and top this film with my next one!

“I hope my class of students next year are as good as the great class I had this year. They did fantastic animation and visual-effects work. Well done team!”

A team of 44 third-year Bachelor of Art and Design students carefully crafted and then inventively killed a total of 30 CGI animals.

After making its debut at Show Me Shorts, Accidents, Blunders & Calamities will head to France to screen at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in February 2016. We’re sure its charming brand of mayhem will find favour with French audiences too.
